GRANTS - On Tuesday, February 13, the Grants Lady Pirates and Pirates took on the St. Pius Sartans and both took a tough loss.

The 7th-ranked Pirate boys were away, and unfortunately lost to No. 5 St. Pius, 72-53, sending them to their first District loss after a two-game win streak. Grants is 15-9 overall after the loss and 3-3 in District play with two regular-season games remaining.

Back at home, the Lady Pirates lost to the No. 1 ranked Lady Sartans. It shouldn’t be a surprise though, as the Lady Sartans are also 6-0 in Districts with a record of 20-3 on the season. The Lady Pirates are now 4-19 on the season and 1-5 in District games.

The Pirates and Lady Pirates will be back in action on Friday, February 16 as the Lady Pirates will take on the Highland Lady Hornets in an away game. The Lady Hornets are not doing so well recently, as they are on a two-game losing streak and 2-3 in District games with a 10-12 record on the season.

On the other hand the Pirates will take on the Highland Hornets at home on senior night, though it may not be the Pirate seniors’ last game of the season. With the Pirates currently holding a No. 7 ranking, they are still in the running to host a first-round State Tournament game, though that will depend on how the Pirates perform down the stretch.

The No. 1 Hornets are on a hot streak right now as they have won four games in a row. The Hornets are also 5-0 in Districts with an overall record of 18-5. Also something to look out for, is the fact that the Hornets are ranked No.1 in District 5-4A and they also have the No.1 ranked player in the State, Jesus Licon, who is also ranked No. 6 in the nation.
